Joe Sweeney's overall responsibility includes the company's brokerage & clearing, managed products, retail retirement products, cash & certificates, personal trust, information management, service delivery, home & auto insurance, and Ameriprise India operations. In 2005, he led the operations effort for the transition of Ameriprise to an independent, publicly traded company.

Sweeney joined American Express, former parent company of Ameriprise Financial, in 1983 and has served in a number of senior leadership positions across the firm.

Joe earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in economics from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. where he is a member of the board of trustees and currently serves on the Finance, Investment & Student Affairs committees. He serves on the board of directors of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), is a member of the SIFMA executive committee, and the SIFMA private client group steering committee. In addition, he serves on the IDS Property Casualty Insurance Company & Ameriprise Insurance Company board of directors, the American Enterprises Investment Services board of directors, and chairs the board of directors for the company's broker-dealer subsidiary; Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc., and also Ameriprise National Trust Bank.
