Professor Kyle Hubbard of the Philosophy Department is our moderator for this reading period. Why he chose this book: “First, it is a deeply New Hampshire book. No novel that I am aware of is as evocative of our state. Second, its characters are incredibly memorable. Once you’ve read it, you will never forget Owen, Harriet Wheelwright, Hester Eastman, and others. Finally, it raises questions about fate, faith, and God’s will that will be interesting to discuss.”
