James (Jim) McDonnell ’81 has been named the new Chief of Police of the Los Angeles Police Department. McDonnell is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at Saint Anselm College.
McDonnell’s job as Chief of Police will be overseeing and maintaining the department's day-to-day operations. His goals for the department are to increase public safety, increase recruitment and retention within the department, strengthen trust within the public, develop community relationships, maintain respectful police practices, and prepare the LAPD and partners for the challenges ahead, especially with the World Cup coming in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028.
